The city is test driving a pilot program for elderly and disabled residents called the Taxi Smart Card, which will provide eligible participants with — you guessed it — a card allowing them to use livery and taxi cabs as an alternative to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Access-A-Ride.
The test area will include Marine Park, Mill Basin, Mill Island, Bergen Beach, Flatlands, and Canarsie.
“We were exploring alternative ways to provide transportation for those with disabilities and this provides another avenue for getting them the transportation they need,” said Jon Minners, Department for the Aging spokesman.
The program will provide up to 1,000 cards to eligible area residents. Currently, there are about 800 spots left in the program, according to Minners. With this new card in hand, Taxi Smart Card participants can hail livery cabs street side, as opposed to Access-A-Ride, which must be called in advance.
To participate in the program, the elderly and handicapped people can apply to the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities or the Department for the Aging. If deemed eligible, they may purchase a card by sending in a money order of $12.50. The city will supplement that payment with an additional $87.50. Access-A-Ride is the city’s paratransit service for individuals unable to use public bus or subway service for some or all of their trips. This shared-ride, door-to-door service is called “demand-response” because eligible customers must reserve in advance for each trip. A common complaint amongst Access-A-Ride users is that drivers are frequently late for their pickups. The new program might provide a more expedient way to get around the city.
“When they’re good, they’re good. But when they’re bad, fuggedaboutit,” said a scooter-bound Brooklynite who relies on Access-A-Ride. He refused to give his name for fear of being black-listed from the Access-A-Ride.
“Everyday’s an adventure, because they’ll either pick you up on time, or they’ll pick you up an hour late,” he said.I have tried several sets of lampshades that have lasted one season only.
Naturally, wheelchair-bound men and women may find it difficult, or impossible, to use livery cabs, which do not have handicap lifts like the Access-A-Ride vehicles.
The city hasn’t decided whether to make this a full-fledged program, and this may be the last chance disabled New Yorkers have to take a taxi on the city’s dime.
“This is only a pilot program,” said Minners. “We would love to see it continue and expand, but we can’t do that until we determine the success of the program.”
Kamal, who spoke to Ahram Online last month, expected the smart card system to save some LE30 billion out of Egypt's fuel subsidy bill, which the government expects to reach LE99.6 billion, in the coming 2013/14 fiscal year — some 15 percent of total forecast public expenditures.
Under the new system, vehicles with smaller engines (1,600cc or smaller) will be assigned an annual 1,800 litres of petrol at the subsidised price. City breaks ground on four building
The
city broke ground Wednesday on a new firehouse, community center and
$44.9 million in street repairs in the Lower Ninth Ward.
Construction on the new Sanchez Community Center will begin this spring and is expected to be completed in summer 2014.
The $19 million building will be 65,000 square feet on the lakeside corner of North Claiborne and Caffin avenues. GIVE CREDIT FOR LIFE-CYCLE EMISSIONS CUTS BY AUTOMAKERS?
Long before the first turn of the ignition key to start up a freshly-built car as it leaves the assembly line, a car has left a trail of emissions behind it. From the mining of ore that will eventually become engines and body panels, to the pumping and refining of oil that will later become plastic bumpers and dashboards to the melting of sand for glass, every step along the way to manufacture cars and trucks leaves carbon dioxide and other emissions in its wake.
While we focus mostly on what comes out of tailpipes, emissions from the full life-cycle – the cradle-to-grave life of a car – should be considered and taken into account. While governments regulate tailpipe emissions and penalize car companies that don't make the grade, shouldn't governments also give credit back to manufacturers who cut manufacturing emissions? Shouldn't government emissions regulations consider the life-cycle assessments of emissions of cars and trucks, not just the what comes out of steel pipes at the rear of cars or trucks? For manufacturers that reduce full, life-cycle emissions, shouldn't they be they be rewarded, somehow, perhaps as credits against tailpipe emissions?

Even today hydroelectric and geothermal power is used in the energy intensive job of smelting aluminum which is being used increasingly in cars and trucks to lighten up and increase fuel economy.
In efforts to cut emissions attributed to cars and trucks, clean energy in manufacturing may be taking its first baby steps.
At Ford's River Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan solar energy provides a small amount of electricity and hot water to the plant. Greek Goddess meets a Snow Storm
The Volkswagen Eos gets its name from the Greek Goddess
of the Dawn. According to Greek mythology, the Goddess Eos was responsible for
opening the gates of heaven for the Sun to rise each morning. The 2012 VW Eos
Lux does not open the gates of heaven, but it does allow its occupants to be
immersed in the beautiful outdoors by retracting it’s folding hardtop. The
Colorado Rocky Mountains are not a bad place to enjoy a convertible, although
preferably during the warm season.
The Volkswagen Eos has been refreshed for the 2012 model year. The front and rear fascias have been updated and convey a more masculine and aggressive look than before. The squared off headlights, the upper and lower grills, and the fog lights draw a strong connection to the looks of the current Jetta. The shape and design of the tail lights have also been updated to match the latest corporate design. All together, I like the updates. I was not a huge fan of the large chrome grill of the previous version, so I welcome this refresh. However, I was bummed that my 2012 test car did not have the LED daytime running lights and HID headlights. They are available on the 2013 models that are on sale now.
The Eos interior stays mostly the same as before, and it is almost identical to the interiors found in the GTI and the Golf. The Eos Lux model adds wood trim on the dash and the center console. The second row is where the Eos differs from the other Volkswagen products. The top part of the roof is glass that can be opened separately, making the Eos a coupe with a moonroof.Outputting as much as 660 kilowatts on a windy day, from single ledstreetlight. Then, the roof can complete the metamorphosis and turn into a clean looking drop-top.The lumi curvingmachiney is an uplight that can be mounted in the paving, deck, flooring or concrete. This roof is one of the slower ones, but works all on it’s own – no manual latches here. With the roof up I noticed some road noise coming more the rear of the car at highway speeds. The noise is not uncomfortable, but I expected this car to be a little quieter to match its luxurious image.
A December snow storm is not the ideal time to enjoy a convertible, but I made the best of it. I drove this Eos on dry roads before the storm, then during the snow fall, and in the aftermath. The power-train on the Eos is very easy to configure. It has just one choice, albeit it’s the award winning 2.0 liter Turbo (TSI) 4-cylinder backed by the excellent 6-speed DSG automated manual transmission. The motor produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque.
This does not sound like a lot on paper, but anybody who has driven any Volkswagen with this motor will tell you that it’s a quick one. This engine delivers the power in one strong punch. I would not call it turbo lag. I would call it an explosion. This basically means that the driver should be gradual in applying the accelerator pedal from a dead stop.Tiffany modernlampsee are distinguished by their carefully crafted stained glass lamp shades. If you floor it, the torque quickly overwhelms the front tires and you either spin them or the traction control comes in to rein you in. Perhaps, a grippier tire would help the Eos hook up and put the power down.
