Dumfries and Galloway install stargazer-friendly lights

A RURAL council is investing millions of pounds to install “dark skies” lamps in all of its street lighting in a move which could make it one of the world’s most astronomy-friendly communities. 

Dumfries and Galloway is spending 7.4 million to convert the region’s 24,000 street lights from old-fashioned sodium models to new more efficient LED versions. 

Although primarily aimed at meeting key carbon emissions targets and saving thousands of pounds, the council also hopes the move will provide a boost to the local economy by attracting more star-gazing tourists. 

The UK’s first Dark Sky Park set up through an international movement promoting light-pollution-free skies has already been credited with fuelling a rise in visitor numbers during the traditionally quite winter months since it was established in Galloway Forest in 2009. 

If the council gains the status of a Dark Sky Community under the growing initiative, it would become the largest in terms of population in the world. 

Outlining the hopes for the refit, Councillor Graham Nicol, who represents the Mid Galloway ward where the Dark Sky Park is located, said: “The first lights which we installed in Glentrool village for the Dark Sky Park have been a great success. The locals seem to have accepted them and the savings are quite dramatic. 

“The park has already brought in quite a lot of people here and the big advantage is that they come at a time of year when tourism is usually lower,The Solar Centre's range ofcuttingmachine00p will power nearly all portable devices. between October and April.” 

The Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS), which played a key role in establishing a Dark Sky Park, welcomed the move to expand the status region-wide. Keith Muir, FCS tourism and recreation manager for Galloway, has worked closely with the council’s lighting and carbon-reduction teams. 

He said: “It’s a fantastic move for the area. Being the UK’s Dark Sky Park is a huge asset for us. It is a specific draw that is attracting people to the area who might not otherwise come. It’s an investment in the future.” 

The light cast by LEDs is whiter than the orange light of sodium lamps which means that they do not need to be so powerful. The sodium lamps installed in Glentrool were 67 watts each compared to LED lamps of just 40 watts.

Addressing Fears About LED Light Bulbs

In my Times column Thursday, I reviewed a new generation of LED light bulbs. For LED bulbs, the biggest issue that most consumers will notice is the color. You correctly point out that you can get different colors, and also different shades of white, from warm white,We are committed to goodledstrips an eco friendly industry. to cool white, to daylight. However, not all white is the same. Two bulbs, both of which measure 2700K (warm white) color may create a completely different impression in the room.

The difference is C.R.I. (Color Rendering Index). Incandescent bulbs have a C.R.I. of 100. Really bad LEDs have a C.R.I. of 50; average ones (most of them) have a C.R.I. of 80 to 85. The really good ones have C.R.I.’s above 90.

C.R.I. is a way of expressing how many colors in the rainbow are actually contained in the white light. Incandescent bulbs contain every color in the rainbow, all in equal measure.

With LED bulbs that have low C.R.I.’s, the color of objects looks wrong, and everything “feels” ghostly. It is not a subtle effect. Wow. Well, I’d never heard of C.R.I., and it certainly isn’t listed on the package.

I can say only that I’m completely happy with the light color of the Cree bulbs. They look nothing like the weak, diluted light of the compact fluorescents they’re going to replace. I don’t perceive anything ghostly or wrong about them.

Why I don’t have LED bulbs: I have yet to see one that puts out close to the same lumens of an incandescent bulb rated at 75 or 100 watts offered for sale in my area.

Many of you made this point: that the 40- and 60-watt bulbs I reviewed are not bright enough for aging eyes, reading, detail work and so on.

That really is a good point. You can buy 75- and 100-watt-equivalent LED bulbs — online, they’re plentiful — but they’re still expensive ($30 to $45 each).

At my home, CFLs don’t last half as long as stated on the box, and when CFL electronics flame out, they leave that nasty burnt electronics smell, strongly disliked by my wife. A few friends have reported CFL flame outs that have set things on fire.

Sorry to hear that! However, my column was about LED lights, not compact fluorescent light bulbs. Compact flourescents are basically curlicue tubes filled with gas that lights up. LED bulbs use tiny light-emitting diodes, of the type you have seen in some flashlights and the “flashes” of smartphones.

Looks like it’s a lot like the Philips Hue kit I reviewed, in that these are LED bulbs you can control from a phone app: brightness, timing and color. The beauty of LIFX, though, is that there’s no router box required. The networking electronics are right in the bulb.

These bulbs did super-well on Kickstarter, so they’ve obviously captured the public’s imagination. I’m in touch with the creators, and they’ve promised to send me one to try out when it becomes available!

But I’m not sure why we keep talking about compact fluorescent lights. LED technology is completely different. There is zero relationship between a compact fluorescent light bulb’s light quality and LED’s light quality.

You neglected an important point: because of heat issues, you’re not supposed to put LED bulbs into enclosed fixtures, like ceiling “cans.”

Actually, I asked Cree specifically about this. The representative says the bulbs are fine in ceiling cans. “The Cree LED bulb can be used in any application that would use an incandescent bulb.Of all the equipment in the laundry the ledstriplightww is one of the largest consumers of steam. As long as there is an opportunity for air to circulate, the bulb is designed to work properly.”

Gaming firms have eye on overseas markets

Entertainment equipment manufacturing companies from Zhongshan are looking to make inroads in overseas markets, even as the city strives to be the global design and manufacturing hub for the entertainment industry.

He feels that manufacturing costs for Chinese companies are less costly than others due to the lower labor and raw material costs. "The price of products made in Europe can be three to five times more expensive than those made in China."

Liang Guoqiang, general manager of Zhongshan G-Look Amusement Machine Co Ltd says that his company's long-term plan is to integrate more Chinese cultural elements into its products and export these to the overseas markets.

Liang, however, says that though Chinese companies are fast catching up in production techniques, they still have a lot to learn from their Western counterparts, especially on aspects like business operations.

"After several years of development, many of the developed countries are now capable of producing gaming equipment with better quality and in large scale. The biggest advantage they enjoy over Chinese companies is their understanding of the business, gained largely from their advanced manufacturing techniques for equipment manufacture.

The company offers equipment packages for all types of laser tag equipment. It also provides assistance and advice on facility design, installation of laser equipment and training.

LED lights can save 1,600 MW

The replacement of conventional streetlights with that of light emitting diode (LED) lights across the country could save 1,600MW, suggests a presentation on LED technology to Capital Development Authority (CDA).

Based on the projections and returns, LED lighting project is not only financially viable, but also provides additional electricity to the national grid and is in the national interest, an official said on Monday.

The Capital Development Authority plans to replace 65,000 conventional streetlights in Islamabad with that of LED lights that would save over 50 percent energy, he said. According to the documents available with The News, the project would reduce the CDA's electricity bill by 50 percent.

At present, the annual bill of the CDA is around Rs1.2-Rs1.4 billion that continues to rise. The project was approved by the CDA Development Working Party comprising technical and financial experts.

The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) made a concept clearance to the project after getting a nod from the cabinet to take immediate measures for the conservation of energy in the prevailing difficult times of crisis, the official said.

In the backdrop of future energy crisis, the National Energy Conservation Centre , Ministry of Environment, in a letter dated January 12, 2010 advised the CDA to replace the conventional public lighting system with LED lights to reduce energy consumption.

The letter says, “We believe that the systems such as HID/LED lights can save approximately two megawatts plus electrical energy on an immediate basis in the CDA's streetlight load.”

With a total cost of Rs6.524 billion, the CDA would spent only Rs1.631 billion on the project, while the remaining amount would be borne through less debt financing in five to seven years, the money which would be saved through reducing the energy consumption in the city after installing LED lights, according to the letter.

The LED European technology will substantially save the replacement cost of conventional lighting, as at present, the existing lights are replaced after every one-and-a-half-year on an average.

The useful life of LEDs is 20 years . “No maintenance is required as the system is maintenance-free and environment-friendly. With the replacement of the existing conventional lights to LED lights, the cost of wiring in the new areas will be reduced by 60 percent due to reduced load and the line losses will be reduced because of the reduced flow of current. An inbuilt “Intelligent Lighting Control System” is present in this European technology, which saves over 70 percent of electricity,” the presentation suggested.

After installing the LED lights in the city, a stock of 65,000 conventional lights would be sold to Afghanistan and, in this regard, negotiations between the two countries are underway, an official said.

According to the documents, the project will also allow income from the sale of carbon credits, estimated approximately one million euros per annum, he said. LED lighting is a paradigm shift in the outdoor lighting industry.

Though there is a little criticism on the use of this new technology, the LED lighting is gradually getting global acceptance as most of the cities in America and Japan are shifting to LED system of lighting and saving 50 percent of the energy consumption.

“LED lights in Islamabad can serve as a model and can pave the way for introduction of the energy-efficient lights throughout Pakistan,” the official added.

BP money buys sports towels, Christmas lights, jingles

BP announced the $30 million tourism grants in April. While the agreement for the $30 million doesn't prevent Florida from pursuing any claims against BP or others, officials there decided a week later not to join other Gulf states in a lawsuit against Transocean, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig at the heart of the spill.

Florida's tourism spending spree isn't the first time that BP money has allowed government officials to snag items from their wish lists.

Separately, BP had already poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the four Gulf states in the months after the oil spill — with few strings attached. The Associated Press documented earlier this year how some of the $754 million given to local governments had been spent on tasers, SUVS and pick-up trucks, rock concerts, an iPad and other items with no direct connection to the oil spill.

In all, BP has given $150 million to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi for tourism promotion since the oil spill, with the Sunshine State getting the lion's share — $62 million.

In the case of the more-recent payout, Florida Panhandle counties have allocated more than $23 million of the $30 million through September, with $13.5 million used on for television, digital, radio and print advertising. The counties have also spent millions on a variety of attention-grabbing gimmicks, The Associated Press found through public records requests and interviews.

Some wonder whether the most extravagant promotions — such as Panama City Beach's $1 million Christmas display — are worth it.

"It wasn't all that busy out here last weekend," Charles Walsingham, a beachside merchant near the display, said a few days after the Christmas lights were turned on and the ice rink opened in early December. "There weren't that many people over there skating and that is a lot of money to spend."

The seven counties spent $2.5 million on promotions alone.

In Pensacola, the BP money paid for $30,000 worth of sports towels and another $30,000 worth of fleece blankets given out at local sporting events. In neighboring Perdido Key, officials spent $300,000 on American Express gift cards for overnight visitors. They also purchased $12,500 worth of BP gas cards for tourists who present receipts showing they've stayed in the area, essentially putting BP funds back into the company's pocket.

Alison Davenport, chair of the Perdido Key Chamber and Visitors Center, said the goal is to get tourists driving to the area next spring. "We had no hesitation in choosing BP gas cards over any others since BP's grant money has made the incentivized travel promotion possible," she said.

Okaloosa County, home to Destin and Fort Walton Beach, is giving away a trip to the Super Bowl and tickets to the BCS championship football game to drive traffic to its Facebook page. South Walton Beach also is giving away BCS tickets on Facebook.

Hubbell Lighting Illuminates New Home for Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority

Designed by the Rhode Island-based architectural firm of Robinson Green Beretta (RGB) and Boston-headquartered Architectural Engineers, Inc (AEI), the new $34 million transit operations facility in Providence, RI began construction in 2008 and was completed in 2010.

Intended to consolidate operations previously spread out in several buildings, the overall RIPTA design and build objective was to create a facility to house RIPTA operations for at least the next 80 years, said John Racine, RGB's project architect. In addition to housing administrative offices, the 140,000 sq. ft. building provides space for total bus maintenance tasks, now to be conducted under one roof.

The result of the two-year plus construction project is a state-of-the-art building in terms of maintenance, electronics, and security, and one that reflects the traditional look of New England architecture. Examples of the facility's high design include a white membrane roof to effectively dissipate heat build-up; moisture barriers that provide as much drainage as possible; the largest installation of heavy-duty street pavers in New England; a parking deck on the roof, also unusual for New England architecture; and high efficiency lighting systems both inside and outside the building.

Extensive tests of light fixtures employing metal halide, fluorescent and LED light sources were conducted prior to final luminaire selection, according to David Walkenstein, a senior electrical engineer at AEI who developed the electrical plan, including the lighting design. The exhaustive tests covered life-cycle studies, distribution patterns and overall costs, he said.

With studies completed and evaluated, eight of the 21 iconic brands manufactured by Hubbell Lighting were chosen to illuminate the new RIPTA building. Architectural Area Lighting's Providence series (the name is coincidental to the project location) with decorative cast bases make up most of the roof parking deck and site lighting. Hubbell Outdoor flood lights and Spaulding Laredo wall packs are employed around the building perimeter. Spaulding Cimarron rectilinear fixtures and Hubbell Industrial class 1 explosion-proof fixtures are used at the fueling station. Topping off the site, Kim Lighting in-grade fixtures illuminate the flag and flagpole.

The areas inside the building are divided into bus parking/storage, maintenance garage, wash bays, fueling, and administration, and feature 4 and 6- lamp T8 fluorescent industrial high bay lighting fixtures from Columbia Lighting. Considering life-cycle costs, including initial cost, power consumption and periodic maintenance for 300 fixtures, plus about 30+ UL wet location luminaries in the wash bays, these were the best solution noted Walkenstein.

The interior corridors are lit with Prescolite low brightness compact fluorescent down lights, and administration offices use Columbia Lighting's Stratus Series indirect/direct center basket light fixtures. Back of the house areas, file copy rooms, and maintenance closets and storage are lit with 100+ of Columbia Lighting's corridor and shallow wrap around fluorescent fixtures.

Completing the lighting of RIPTA's new home, Walkenstein integrated life safety egress path lighting into Prescolite down lights using Dual-Lite integral emergency battery backup and supplemented with Dual-Lite explosion-proof units in hazardous storage areas.

A signature site for motorists along the Napa River in Northern California, the Maxwell Bridge is now illuminated with LED-based fixtures from BetaLED that deliver 31% energy savings.

Napa, California, located north of San Francisco, has completed an LED-lighting installation on its Maxwell Bridge that crosses the Napa River. The bridge was rebuilt in 2005 and is a local architectural landmark. The transition from high-pressure-sodium (HPS) lights to BetaLED solid-state lighting (SSL) has reduced energy use by 9180 kWh per year – a 31% savings.

While energy savings were an important goal for the LED project, the city was also concerned with the aesthetics. “The real test of success was when we lit the bridge. There was just no comparison of the quality of the LED lights to the HPS lights. This confirmed for us that the whole project was worth it,” said Steve Crego, City of Napa Electrical Supervisor.

Nearby photos include both before and after aerial shots and a shot captured on the bridge surface. That surface photo demonstrates both the uniformity and brightness of the LED installation. The city said that the lighting improves pedestrian safety and motorists’ visibility and notes the importance of continuous light levels for the entire length of the bridge.

“The 90-LED LEDway street lights recently installed along the length of the bridge deliver enhanced color quality, uniformity and optimized illumination performance to help increase visibility and safety,” said Kevin Orth, Vice President of Sales for BetaLED. “The City is realizing significant energy savings from the retrofit while meeting the Caltrans highway lighting specification.”

Napa worked with the Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) utility in choosing and installing the LEDway lights. The 60 new 90W SSL luminaires replaced 200W HPS lights. “Because of PG&E’s extensive experience in street light installation and maintenance we’re able to help municipalities with project design, installation and billing updates – saving them time and money,” said John Sofranac, PG&E street and outdoor lighting manager.

The city began contemplating a relighting project in 2009 when it received a grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and established the City of Napa Sustainability Program. The bridge project was just completed this spring.

According to the local Napa Valley Register newspaper, the Maxwell Bridge is just part of the LED story in the region, although perhaps the most visible one. The bridge project was part of a larger 148-light retrofit with LEDs that also included some local streets.

Moreover, Napa is planning to convert 146 additional street lights according to the local paper. Once that second project is complete, the city could save $23,000 annually in energy costs. The city’s Crego also expects significant maintenance savings.

Still Napa is a good example of the potential that remains for LED installations and far-greater energy savings. Even when the city completes its next project bringing the total of LED lights to 294, that number is a small percentage of the 6000 lights that the city owns.

In related news in the Northern, California region, the city of Millbrae has completed its first major LED-street-light project also using BetaLED fixtures according to the New Streetlights website. A $112,630 DOE Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funded the installation of 278 LED street lights.

Millbrae projects annual energy savings of $10,000 via a 68,791 kWh reduction in energy usage. That corresponds with a reduction in greenhouse gases by 36,047 pounds per year. The LED lights will use 50 to 60% less energy that the HPS lights that were replaced.

Last week I attended Lightfair, North America’s largest lighting show, in Philadelphia.  It was my first time attending the show since May of 2008, when it was held in Las Vegas.  It was amazing to see just how much had changed -- which until the last couple of years hasn’t been much.

The biggest innovation in lighting (after Edison invented the incandescent bulb) was fluorescent lights, which GE started selling in 1938.  The second was probably the invention of the solid state dimmer switch in 1959 by Lutron.  Sure there have been improvements since then, but there are few (if any) technical fields that have seen fewer changes than the lighting world (especially when you consider how massive the lighting industry is).

That was true, of course, until LEDs came into the picture. Back in ’08, there was a smattering of LED-based lights (or solid state lights -- SSL), but the majority of them were fluorescent, halogen or based on some other technology.  Today, as last week proved, it is all about LEDs. Despite the fact that SSLs are still in their infancy (the biggest use cases today are in street lights, specialty retail and some museums), there was a plethora of lights and enabling technologies being showcased at Lightfair this year. Here are some of the trends that I found most interesting.

The LED version of Edison’s classic

There’s a reason why Edison’s invention is still talked about 100 years after the fact --  the endurance of the original light bulb design is remarkable. Its time may be running out, however, as numerous governments have, or are investigating outlawing the bulbs in favor of more energy efficient versions. At Lightfair, I saw a number of screw-in replacement bulbs made out of LEDs. There were literally dozens of 40W replacement bulbs from behemoths like GE and young upstarts like Lemnis Lighting. As I looked for higher-wattage bulbs, however, the list got shorter. At the top of the range I saw only two 100W replacement LED-based bulbs. One was from Sylvania: it was behind a case and you couldn’t touch it. The other was from a startup that was just out of stealth, Switch Lighting (and you could play with their bulb). Switch’s bulb looks really interesting (check out a picture here) and was one of the few bulbs that was liquid-cooled (i.e., the bulb is filled with a liquid vs. a gas). Switch also claims to have a proprietary driver technology that allows them to achieve the 100W mark.

The big question to me in this market is whether someone will develop technology that gives them a sustainable cost advantage. Markets like light bulbs show tremendous price elasticity.  To be successful, I think companies need to show that they can have a cost advantage through some cleverness or distinctive intellectual property in their design. My investment interests aside, it’s clear to me that consumers are about to get access to high-quality LED bulbs that will naturally get cheaper over time.

The desire to educate consumers on light quality

In the past I’ve seen the benefits of SSL marketed in terms of energy reduction (that’s the driver for our investment in Redwood Systems). At the show, however, I saw a number of companies that were aiming to educate consumers on the benefits of SSL to deliver higher quality light.  We’ve all experienced low-quality light -- from the dull blue light given off by the 1970s-era fluorescents to the eerie yellow light of a high-pressure sodium bulb. I didn’t fully understand the benefits of higher-quality light until last week, however.

We have already spent many hours in this discussion and most of them were the problems we have shared with each other and tried to solve them. One of such common topic is based on kitchen. Actually, kitchen is such a sensitive factor in our daily life that every day we need to do something new in it. Common people always try to be somehow creative when they stay inside a kitchen and need to spend some time of relaxation with an interesting recipe or even some innovation of the interior design of the kitchen complex. Whatever it may be, one thing that we need to have, is the lighting. Making a good dish or designing a new decoration inside a kitchen will never be successful if you have no plan of good lights for the kitchen.

Kitchen lighting is now turned to a most discussing topic internationally. As soon as you connect internet you will see tons of new ideas posted in the sites by the designers. This trend has both positive and negative side. People are regularly getting benefits of new ideas and information on new gadgets and facilities for the users but at the same time, several persons are unnecessarily misguiding people with some self-thought baseless ideas without the basic knowledge of technology and ethics.

However, despite of all these factors, I should say that the lighting is factor that needs a basic knowledge of the technology used in the models and obviously, every user should use his personal intelligence and consideration in his kitchen lighting plan. Otherwise, just following the instruction given in some sites without judging their compatibility with your own kitchen will be wastage of time and money.

The under cabinet region of a kitchen is the most important part. It is the point of equilibrium considering the volume of workload as well as the focus of the beauty of the whole kitchen. A perfect under cabinet kitchen lighting not only attracts a visitor but it confirms a high intrinsic value of the house.

Naturally, I have spent maximum time in renovation of my kitchen and thought a lot about it from all sides. Before starting my layout, I have searched and familiarized myself with almost all new trends and technologies and acquainted with all pros and cons of several models of lights. Incidentally, I am not so much financially sound and it was, you could say, a must-do factor to research and avoid all unnecessary experimentation upon my kitchen. My kitchen is of a very small type of 400 sq. feet and here I will share my idea about the under cabinet lighting I used so far and pleased with the overall performance.

As my kitchen is small, I have removed all excess cabinets and just used two big cabinets left and right and two central small cabinets in between them and all are with glass doors. I preferred light green and black contrast all over the wall to keep my kitchen spacey in look. Cabinets are of a combination of navy blue and black with grey accented ridges.

Under the cabinets, I used recessed puck lights from Rite Lite (Model No. LPL626BX) 5 LED pivot and Swivel puck light 6 pack series. Those are all grey in color matched with my grey accent. These lights have long life span of 1,00, 000 hours, very tiny (3" diameter) , space saving and extremely energy saving too.

Secondly, it is very comfortable in changing the angle of the light as much as I need as it has a 360-degree swivel. Another interesting thing is, I can control the brightness of it just by pushing it. Single push for full brightness, twice to make it dimmed and a consecutive third to turn it off.
I used these puck lights with a combination of 27 SMD 24" Led strip light of 8 watt, (Model No. 2041WH) inside the cabinet to display my black dinnerware. That shows a very attractive contrast of my black dinnerware with the pale green backside wall of the cabinets. This Led strip consists of a set of 48 Led lamps of an overall consumption of 15 watt, very slim-lined and bright illumination. Easy to install, just by clipping on the surface. Here I should recommend another model of same advantage and that is Juno Lighting Pro-Series LED under cabinet fixture (Model No. UPL30-SL). I used these strips under the counter top that gives a very beautiful glow between the space of the counter top and the floor.

I am pleased with my work, at least I can say. Nobody yet criticized my design those have seen it.

I should conclude, that I am highly grateful to some sites of best kitchen lighting those helped me perfectly in researching on the lights under a small expense that I could afford and recommended my friends to take help of those sites.

By the end of this year, people will be able to buy an LED light bulb controllable from an Android device, part of Google's move into home automation.

At the Google I/O conference today, Google demonstrated how Android devices, including tablets and smartphones, can act as a hub for controlling multiple devices in the home, including lighting, appliances, thermostats, and music.

Google concocted a lighting demo system with Lighting Sciences Group, which developed an LED bulb that can talk to Android. It uses a new mesh network wireless protocol rather than Wi-Fi, ZigBee, or the other proprietary home automation protocols.

The hope is that software developers will create applications that use the home automation system of connected devices. The demo at Google I/O was of a person playing a shooting video game with the lights turning on and off as shots were fired, said Eric Holland, the director of electrical engineering at Lighting Sciences Group.

"Lighting is very visible and prevalent so it made sense for it to be first foray for the platform," Holland said. "Every one of the lights has a radio integrated inside the lamp so there's no additional equipment."

Many companies are building home automation systems built around connected objects, which give people a way to set up schedules around lighting and heating/cooling. People can also turn plugged-in items on and off from a central point, such as a tablet or small dashboard.

Having many devices communicating using ZigBee or Wi-Fi could create interference problems, one reason why a new protocol is being used, Holland said. Since it is open-source, Google and Lighting Sciences Group hope it will be adopted by other lighting and home automation companies. The networked bulbs will be available by the end of the year at the same cost as their general-purpose LEDs, for which prices range from under $20 to about $35 for a 60-watt equivalent.

Google enters a crowded field of home automation and consumer smart-grid companies that are trying to get a foothold for smart-home products.

Ruud Lighting expanding Racine facility by 220,000 square feet

Racine-based Ruud Lighting has started work on a 220,000 square foot addition to its approximate 500,000 square foot headquarters and production facility. The project, expected to be completed later this year, will be used for the company’s distribution center.

The space that is now used for distribution will be converted for expanded production, said Christopher Ruud, president.

The company is expanding because of the increasing demand for its commercial and industrial lighting products, especially its BetaLED line of LED lights. In 2010, Ruud Lighting had record sales levels, which it anticipates continuing this year, largely because of the continued demand for LED products.

“When we’re adding assembly lines, it’s on the LED front,” Ruud said.

Some of BetaLED’s most prominent selling products have been its street light fixtures, which are in place in Los Angeles, Boston, Anchorage, Alaska, and several other communities in California. The city of Ouray, Colo., has converted all of its street lights to the company’s LED fixtures.

“We have the most installed LED street lights in the U.S. (of any manufacturer),” Ruud said.

County installing LED signals at Belleville intersection.

New traffic signals will grace the intersection of Belleville and Franklin avenues, compliments of Essex County. Construction is expected to start this week and last through August.


The intersection of Belleville and Franklin Led light avenues is part of an Essex County road construction project. Existing traffic signals will be replaced with more modern ones which include Light Emitting Diode lenses and cameras, according to the county, which maintains both roads.

"[LED] bulbs use about 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, last longer and are more visible in inclement weather," a press release states. The signals will also include an eight-hour battery backup to be used in the event of an electrical outage.

The cameras - like those on traffic signals at Union Avenue and Holmes Street - will help regulate traffic flow. If the cameras do not detect traffic in one direction, signals will remain green for motorists traveling in the opposing direction.

Additionally, pedestrian signals will have countdown timers to let people know how many seconds they have to cross the Led light street before the light changes. Also making pedestrians' lives easier, handicapped accessible ramps will be installed at each of the intersection's corners.

According to a notice on the township's website, impacted roadways will remain open during the signal construction, but some nearby driveways may be intermittently inaccessible. Seeking further information, the Times repeatedly reached out to county engineers and the county executive's press office. Neither source returned email messages or phone calls.

The county's traffic project in Belleville is estimated to cost $304,607, according to the press release. The project is funded by state transportation improvement grants, the release states. The Led light state's exact contribution is unclear.

According to Belleville Police Chief Joseph Rotonda, there were no safety concerns at the intersection that prompted the need for upgrades.

"That's actually one of the better intersections in town," Rotonda said.

Montreal mayor fires comptroller in spying scheme

The mayor of Montreal has fired the city's comptroller and demanded his former right-hand man at city council resign over details of a spying scheme that now involves police.

But Claude Dauphin, the city council chairman and Lachine borough mayor says he won't step down and has done nothing wrong.

Dauphin was the target of an internal investigation led by city comptroller Pierre Reid, mayor Gérald Tremblay confirmed Monday at a news conference called after days of speculation.

The probe uncovered "troubling facts" including allegations involving Dauphin and a Lachine demolition company, Tremblay said.

Those findings are now in provincial police hands, and Dauphin should step down until an investigation is complete, the mayor urged.

Dauphin was supposed to chair a regularly-scheduled city council meeting Monday afternoon, after Tremblay's news conference.

Pierre Reid, the controversial comptroller who investigated Dauphin has also been removed from his job, but will remain a city employee.

Reid's methodology has come under fire in the past, namely for "spying" on auditor general Jacques Bergeron last year.

City to replace streetlights with LED bulbs

Within 10 months, Pittsburgh hopes to replace about 3,000 streetlights in the city's business districts with LED bulbs that are brighter and cheaper to light.

City Council on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to the city's first lighting code, which Councilman Bill Peduto said will provide "light equity" -- meaning that all neighborhoods will be lighted equally. He cited Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside as one area that is over-lighted.

Some areas "have streetlights on every pole, and others have just one light at an intersection," Peduto said.

Pittsburgh would be the latest community in western Pennsylvania to upgrade its streetlights with LED technology. In 2009, New Kensington received a $213,000 federal grant to replace nearly 180 lights. City Clerk Dennis Scarpiniti said the city saves about $2,000 a month on its utility bills, but he added that he was unsure how much the LED lights contributed to that savings. The city locks in its utility rates.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's administration has been working for more than two years on plans to upgrade streetlights. Peduto hopes the city would start seeking bids for the lights' replacement in June, and that work would begin in the fall.

The lights will be replaced throughout the city's 50 business districts. Peduto said the effort would be expanded to the rest of the city, which has nearly 40,000 streetlights, during the next few years, though funding has not been secured yet.

An $800,000 state grant would pay for some of the initial work in the business districts, Peduto said. James Sloss, the city's engineering and utilities manager, said the rest of the cost would come from the city's 2011 utility fund.

Some contract changes saved the city more than $500,000, money that can go toward the project, Sloss said.

Pittsburgh is spending about $1 million a year to maintain its streetlights and another $1.1 million on electricity, he noted.

By the time all of the lights are replaced, Sloss said, the city could be saving more than $1.3 million a year.

There are about 50 LED streetlights in the city right now, he said, including along Grandview Avenue in Mt. Washington; in Schenley Park; and along part of Walnut Street in Shadyside.
