The development is a turnaround as the SHPL had reiterated in October last year that the National Stadium pitch would be laid with natural grass. A decision to go synthetic will have significant ramifications on what events can be held there.
For starters, the venue will not be able to stage cricket matches as the International Cricket Council (ICC) only permits the sport to be played on natural grass.
It is also doubtful if athletics' throw events can be held there and, with Singapore hosting the 2015 South-east Asian (SEA) Games, this will be a poser for organisers.
Despite the world governing bodies of football and rugby giving artificial pitches the nod for their respective sports at the highest level, most top teams are reluctant to embrace them, citing concerns about an increased risk of injury for their players.
Natural grass was temporarily laid at Toronto FC's BMO Field when they hosted a friendly against Real Madrid in 2009 and, last October, New Zealand's 2011 World Cup-winning centre Conrad Smith insisted the rugby world champions are not keen to play on artificial turf, even though the All Blacks train on them.

The 35-year-old Englishman was hired by the Spanish champions in 2009 after 12 years at Arsenal, where his work at the Emirates Stadium won him the Premier League's Groundsman of the Year award thrice.
Speaking from Madrid, he told TODAY that, with the right expertise and planning, keeping a grass pitch in top condition should not pose a problem despite rigorous use.

"At the Bernabeu (Real's home ground), our stadium is used extensively for football and concerts and we have extreme weather in summer and winter, but our grass is always in top condition. But Burgess believes Wembley Stadium may just be the model for the Sports Hub. England's national stadium also has year-round events of sports and concerts, and underwent 12 pitch changes since opening in 2007 before settling three years later on natural turf that has artificial fibres woven into it.

News that Singapore's top sporting venue may use synthetic turf caught Singapore Cricket Association Chief Executive Prakash Vijaykumar by surprise.
"Even our local premier league must use grass, and if the National Stadium does not, there is no way top international cricket matches can be held there," he said.
Singapore Athletic Association Vice-President Canagasabai Kunalan added: "We, the Sports Hub and the media should all be on the same page. Everyone should be kept in the loop if something as major as this is being considered.
