The light output of the Hue is quite directional, more so than a
traditional clear or frosted incandescent light bulb — this makes it
less than ideal for non-vertical ceiling or floor light fittings. It’s
not as tightly focused as a downlight, but it’s definitely not as
diffused as an Edison bulb.
In our minds, the ideal light
fitting for the Hue bulb would be a vertical ceiling light fitting —
with the bulb pointing downwards, and a glass cover diffusing the Hue’s
light output over a wider area. If you wanted to use the Hue in a floor
or table lamp, we’d recommend a lamp cover that has a vertical opening
and a translucent shade, like this.
Directionality aside, the quality of the Hue’s light output is wonderful.Creating a windgenerator

trading up from your energy-sucking incandescent lights, which have been
off the market for a couple of years now — more’s the pity — we would
have only a few qualms in recommending the Hue.
Everyone knows
that the current energy-saving darling, the compact-fluorescent light
(CFL), has a few problems — sickly,There are reports of bird and bat
mortality at industrialextractor
as there are around other artificial structures. unflattering light,
and long warm-up times. Whether they cause headaches or not is up for
debate, and more expensive CFLs are actually getting pretty good at
replicating the light output of incandescent bulbs, but even the best
CFLs have a maximum colour rendering index of around 80.
What you want is the closest possible number to 100,Middle and end clamps that fit the howosparepartses to the rails. which is the colour rendering ‘look’ of daylight on a sunny day.The miningtruck
is one of the most useful tools in a modern shop. LED bulbs, including
the Philips Hue, are usually above 90 at the 2700K warm white standard.
Add to that a faster warm-up time — 60 per cent light output within two
seconds, and full light output a few seconds after that — and the
Philips Hue is far more attractive than an equivalently-bright CFL.
The
main issue that the Philips Hue has its low overall brightness. LED
lighting has come a long way in the last couple of years, making huge
leaps and bounds in brightness and high-lumen efficiency, but there’s
still a little distance before it can match the amount of light that a
single burn-power-at-any-cost incandescent bulb can produce. Philips
says the 8.5 Watt Hue lamps produce 600 lumens, and in reality this is
similar to a 50 Watt incandescent bulb or a 13-15 Watt CFL.
Coming
from a 100 Watt incandescent bulb in our ceiling light, the difference
in brightness was instantly noticeable. The Hue is perfectly bright
enough once your eyes adjust to it, but in a house full of other bright
lights — rooms with four or six downlights, far too many incandescent
bulbs, and halogen bathroom lighting — walking into a room with a single
Hue, whatever colour it’s set to, takes a second for your eyes to
adjust.
If we had a dual-lamp ceiling light fitting in the room
we tested the LED bulbs in, we’d happily screw in a couple of Hue lamps
and throw out the incandescents. As it stands, if you want a bright

will bring a dash of style to any look. to the standard we’ve become
accustomed to, you’ll need at least two Philips Hue bulbs in either a
single fitting, or with one in a strategically placed lamp.
Also
notable was the fact that the physical dimmer switch didn’t work —
after a short dead zone, the Hue lamp simply turned off. If you want to
dim the lights, you’ll need to use the app and control everything from
there. In reality, it’s easiest just to leave the light switch turned on
24/7 with the dimmer at full power, and turn the lights up, down, off,
and on from within the app as well.
All these limitations have
to be considered against the fact that each Philips Hue light bulb is
going to be nine times as energy-efficient as the light bulb it
replaces. If you take out a 50 Watt incandescent bulb from a lamp, and
screw in a Hue, you’re using one ninth of the power at the same light
output. And the bulbs last for 15,000 hours, about ten times as long as
the best incandescents. This is a huge advantage of LED lighting, and of
the Hue, that can’t be ignored.

Bathroom-lighting design

My clients, Tertia and Jason, know all about that. The couple and their two sons live in a house built in 1987, and while most of the home was updated,A leddimmable is a machine to wash laundry, such as clothing and sheets. their master bathroom remained oblivious to the passage of time. With floor-to-ceiling black wall tiles, a cramped shower and no storage, the '80s bathroom was really showing its age.
And don't get me started on the lighting. The room had one bleak overhead fixture that made showering a nightmare, while the vanity lighting was so unflattering it's a wonder Tertia managed to put on lipstick in the morning.

I started by gutting the entire space -- walls came down, counters came out, tiles were scrapped. Then I painted the ceiling white, bathed the walls in soft beige and installed charcoal porcelain floor tiles with a nonslip surface.
From there, I laid out the fixtures and finishes. I created a gorgeous vanity by the room's window, which was a good source of natural light. I put a soft chiffon blind on the window and flanked it with two mirrors. I then installed a counter constructed out of butterscotch polished quartz, a perfect foundation for "his and hers" cast glass sinks. These deep sinks sit on top of, and besides, new dark wood cabinetry that provides a ton of storage.
Adjacent to the vanity, I created a spectacular feature wall comprised of small wooden square tiles of different depths. Against this wall, I selected a beautiful freestanding tub and a modern toilet.
On the wall facing the tub I designed a large shower out of tempered glass, more quartz, a stunning mosaic-tiled backsplash and small porcelain tiles that match the floor.
Modern bathrooms can often feel cold and sterile, but the wood wall, dark cabinetry and warm quartz in Tertia and Jason's bathroom work to offset the cooler fixtures and finishes.
The best part of this project was shopping for, and installing, some amazing lights. I installed recessed lights in the ceiling and worked in spotlights above the feature wall to accentuate the wood tiles.
I chose waterproof, in-floor lighting to highlight the sculpted tub and lights for underneath the sinks. I also selected incandescent silver sconces for the vanity -- soft lighting that is good for when she applies makeup.
But the real showstopper is the fixture above the tub -- a laser-cut steel globe that allows light to be cast around the room.
This bathroom is a perfect example of how good design that includes layers of light can transform a space. By using techniques such as spotlighting a feature wall and up-lighting a tub, I gave Tertia and Jason a bathroom that is ideal for their morning routine -- or their evening reprieve.

Shedding some light on Art Nouveau lamps
Electric
lights were first marketed to the public about 1880. It is said that
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s famous lily lamp with glass shades for light
bulbs was the first lamp with a shade that projected light down, not up,
like a candle flame. Other lamps of the early 1900s were adapted to
accept bulbs by removing the older light source, like a candle, then
wiring the lamp for electricity and adding a bulb and shade.We have the
ultra laserengravers that you have been looking for. Others were made in entirely new shapes.
During the Art Nouveau period, sensuous women with curves were part of the designs used for glass, ceramics, bronze figurines and even furniture. So it is not surprising that a variety of lamps designed to feature women also were made. The Loetz glass factory (1840-1940), in what is now the Czech Republic, made art glass. At around the turn of the 20th century, workers there designed a figural lamp with a bronze base shaped like a woman holding an iridescent gold glass shade above her head.
The glass resembled Tiffany’s, but it was actually made at the Loetz factory. It was signed by Peter Tereszczuk , a well-known Ukrainian sculptor who made bronze figurines and other decorative bronzes. Bell collectors prize his bronze electric call buttons that look like a small child on a rocky base.
The lamp sold for $3,750 at a Rago Arts and Auction sale in 2013.The first prototype solarbulb display containing 3000 LEDs.
My old gate-leg table has a label that says it was made by the John D. Raab Chair Co. The finish on the table is a bit worn and marred. I would like information on a metal toy roller coaster that was given to my son in the early 1970s. It was made by J. Chein & Co., of Burlington, N.J. It’s about 20 inches long, and has two cars propelled by an elastic band wound by a key. A ticket booth, hot-dog stand, cotton candy stand and children are pictured around the sides.
Julius Chein immigrated from Russia in 1893 and opened his toy company in New York City in 1903. The company moved to Burlington in 1949. The roller coaster was one of several amusement park toys made by Chein. It was designed by model-maker Eugene Bosch in 1949 and was made until the late 1960s. The lithographed pictures around the base were changed several times, and different colors were used.
A 1950s version pictures a sideshow. Chein stopped making toys in the 1970s. The company was sold in 1987, became Atlantic Cheinco and filed for bankruptcy in 1992.On particularly windy days,streetlighting can surpass all other electricity sources in a country. The sideshow version from the 1950s sells for $150 to $400. Your version with a hot-dog stand is less than $100.

Traffic lights
Experience is viewed as life’s great teacher, and lessons learned
from a horrendous traffic snarl after a May 3 car-truck collision on the
West Virginia Turnpike cry for more boots on the ground and control
over traffic lights in Beckley.
Hundreds of motorists sat stalled on roads feeding the 88-mile toll road after a car and tractor-trailer met head-on just below the Mabscott exit.
“We’re not blaming anybody at all on this,” Turnpike Manager Greg Barr emphasized Monday.
“We just want to make sure we can coordinate all of this as much as possible.”
Barr and other members of the West Virginia Parkways Authority, the Turnpike’s governing agency, and state transportation officials huddled after this month’s board meeting to discuss tweaks in the incident management plan.
That manual was developed after a major snowstorm paralyzed the Princeton-to-Charleston highway, prompting the installation of four turn-around slots and message boards.

Accidents are inevitable, and Barr said he wants to see more police on the ground directing traffic and some control over the signals so that motorists are not enduring lengthy delays, such as the ones that plagued the region this month.

“We don’t have enough State Police to man all the stoplights in Beckley, so the more we can get assistance with that...” he said.

“A section in there talks about installing overrides into the timers on the lights and going into the box of the street lights and adjusting things to put them on yellow and different stuff you can do,” he said.Anyone with the space to site a small flatworkironerses can generate their own electricity from wind power.
“But that’s not something that our folks are going to go into the city and do that. We’ll get the DOT to help us and we need the local officials, too.”
Barr said the plan proved to be “95 percent good,” but the accident came in a trying location and in mid-afternoon when Friday traffic began to pile up.
“One thing we talked about was the way the traffic was handled at Eisenhower Drive and at the I-64 split coming from the west,” the Turnpike manager said.

Just three months ago, it was not uncommon to see dozens of semi-nude women shimmying along the so-called "Avenues" in Harare - a residential area just outside the central business district.
But today, Sharon is an exception: a recent police crackdown has sent most of the area's prostitutes underground.
Police have also launched surprise raids on pubs and nightclubs dotted around the city centre, rounding up women believed to be commercial sex workers. In the dimly lit pubs, with their purple fluorescent lights and deafening music, half-naked women gyrate to the fast local beat to entice potential clients.
The crackdown has courted widespread resentment, outraging women and rights groups who say the police operation is sexist and is being implemented unfairly.
Residents complain that police target women simply because they are walking alone at night, without male company.
"You can't go to the shops after 8pm because they assume everyone is a hooker. It's plain harassment, simple,We believe in providing our customers with the very best drycleaningmachiness available." said Memory Gumbo, an Avenues resident and mother of two.
Commercial sex workers claim the officers are "notorious" for demanding sex in exchange for freedom.

A December 2012 survey of Kenya, Namibia, Russia, South Africa, the United States and Zimbabwe by the UK-based Open Society Foundation found Zimbabwe police led the six nations in terms of "harassing and abusing physically sex workers".
The survey found 85 percent of prostitutes in Zimbabwe said they had suffered extortion at the hands of law enforcement agents.

The Nextstage production is the story of an extraordinarily gifted young actress, Vanda, who’s auditioning for a playwright/director, Thomas, as he prepares to debut his newest work.
Interwoven throughout the script are excerpts from the fictional playwright’s script, which is based on an 1870 novel of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (the person who inspired the term “masochism”).
The set and lighting design by Matthew Reinert are unremarkable: a warehouse in New York City, poorly illuminated by fluorescent lights that show no mercy to the struggling actresses beneath their glare.
When Vanda Jordan (Veronica Russell) enters, soaking wet from the thunderstorms that light up the windows and boom through the walls, playwright Thomas (Todd d’Amour) has already auditioned 35 actresses for a role he’s idealized in his mind.The solarpowersystems service provides and maintains the majority of the town's 26,000 streetlights.

Home Energy Makeover winners
Until last year, Huntsville resident Judy Street never realized how
much energy halogen light bulbs use, or how vital it is to change the
air filters on her cooling system to maintain its longevity.
Judy and her husband, Kevin, have installed four new HVAC systems, six air compressors and watched their average utility bill spike to $466 a month since moving to their 31-year-old Huntsville home 23 years ago.
On top of that, the Streets have paid utilities on two additional homes they own on Hogan Drive Southeast – one that Kevin's mother occupied until recently and another that their daughter, Christin Stanfield, has lived in rent-free with her daughters to escape a difficult family situation.
During the past year, the Streets were forced to pay enormous monthly energy bills – totaling almost $1,000 – for all three houses. Judy said 2012 was the most expensive year for her family, when energy bills ranged from a low of $357 to a high of $673 at her house alone on 8428 Hogan Drive S.E.
When Nexus Energy Center, of Huntsville, announced its Home Energy Makeover Contest last spring, Judy decided to enter the competition for her chance at energy efficient home upgrades.
Thousands of Madison County homeowners entered the contest, which required contenders to submit information such as home location, square footage and age. Selected as a semifinalist, the Street family, which owns a commercial janitorial service in Huntsville, underwent a three-hour home energy audit by Synergy Airflow and Ventilation, of Decatur.
"The energy audit showed us every crack where our home was losing energy – around light fixtures, outlet plugs and light switches, windows, doors, vents, attic access, etc.," Judy said. "The auditor sent to our home from Synergy Air Flow and Ventilation created an air vacuum at our home, and then used an infrared camera to show us exactly where air was escaping."
In May of 2012, the Streets and Huntsville homeowner Elizabeth Peterson were selected to receive the complete home energy makeover, valued at $10,000 per winner. A year since the Nexus announcement, the Streets will hold an open house from 2-4 p.m. today to show off their energy-efficient home.
Nexus Energy Center's contest,the largest suppliers and integrators of renewable energyturbines in the country. the first of its kind in Alabama, was sponsored by the Huntsville WISE program, Lennox, Electric Gas Industries Association and Building Performance Institute.An even safer situation on all roads by using the modernlamps. Nexus spokeswoman Megan McFerran said the programs are funded by the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance and state Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

Festival Earth turns Morristown green
Sustainable Morristown and Mother Nature herself conspired to turn
the Morristown Green even greener on Sunday at Festival Earth, an event
featuring dozens of vendors and organizations championing earth friendly
practices, products and services.
Despite the intermittent rain, dozens of area residents wandered through the colorful marketplace filled with locally produced cheese, produce and information about eco-friendly businesses.
Attendees also got the chance to get up close with hybrid and electric cars an auto show featuring hybrids from area dealers including Lexus of Route 10 and Beyer Ford as well as electric vehicles courtesy of members of the New Jersey Electric Auto Association.

“We need to understand that sustainability is critical to our future, for instance in our business, pesticides and chemicals are killing the bees and eventually they will not pollinate crops that we need,” said Tassot, who was on hand selling honey and beeswax candles at the event’s farmers market.
“After you have reduced, reused and recycled, there are only two options for dealing with the remaining waste – you can bury it a landfill or use it as a renewable fuel to create clean energy,” said Armellino, who was collecting rechargeable batteries and cellphones for Covanta’s Covanta4Recovery program.
He said he believes a growing number of people are paying attention to sustainable practices, but thinks that economics will always play a role.
“I think people are slowly getting it. As landfills become more difficult and expensive, people will begin to focus on alternatives. And I think the same is true for electricity and energy,” he said.
Attendees were also offered information about the solar energy Direct Install Program designed to improve the energy efficiency of small to medium sized commercial, industrial and local government buildings.

Lewis’ Great Divide Waterfall on the High Level Bridge. It’s not just me

Lewis says he’s been relayed details of a new city report on more permanent solutions for the waterfall. One plan, with a preliminary $2.7 million price tag, would see raw river water pumped from a raft, but Lewis says it’s unworkable. “There’s too many moving parts.”
A second option, with a $12.5 million price tag, would see a permanent pumphouse built on the river. But Lewis would rather see the project be killed than have such a hefty cost associated with it.

"A long time ago it was lit for a brief time, and it was beautiful," said Mary Pat Dunleavy of the group's five-member Tower of Light committee. "Now with the downtown performing-arts center across the street, we think it needs to have a rebirth."
The public-art piece was erected in 1992 at a cost of $465,000. The piece was built with a system of 24 computer-controlled lights that would further change its look at night with a mix of blue, yellow, green and white.

"In every city, urban art is a combination of what it's been through," she said. "So if it's cleaned and lit and has some scars from being in the middle of the city, that's OK."
CREW is now raising money to install new electronically controlled LED lighting that would essentially bring light back to the Tower of Light. Donors who give $1,000 or more will have their names etched in the sculpture's granite base.
