A new art installation has been unveiled at Rochdale’s new library.
The piece, entitled ‘Emily’ is situated in the new children’s library in
Number One Riverside on Smith Street.
The new work, by local
artist Peter King, sees a series of motion-sensitive, book-shaped
light-boxes suspending from the ceiling to fill the library atrium
below.
Emily is an open-armed young girl encouraging young
readers to fulfil their potential and reminding them ‘the sky is the
limit’.

and imagination inspired me to create this reminder to our next
generation that they should always remain in touch with their
creativity. That every great thing started off as a single thought, as
did every book in this library.”
Peter’s love of the natural
world has been incorporated into the original lighting installation,
chosen out of three unique designs and taking two weeks to create and
install.
When illuminated the artwork casts light across the
library’s atrium and the unique daylight tubing brings the illusion of
the outdoors inside. Commissioned by Rochdale Metropolitan Borough
Council, Emily makes use of the latest energy saving technologies with
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) that are longer lasting and reduce carbon
emissions by two thirds.
Councillor Peter Williams, cabinet
member for economic development and customer services at Rochdale
Borough Council, added: “This is a really unique and stimulating piece
that is a testament to local talent and compliments our modern,
purpose-built building adding to its inspirational learning and social
environment.”

his skills to artistic and creative use. This unique transition from
tradesman to artist has enabled him to showcase his craft in a creative
space.
Peter added: “Feature lighting can be used to compliment
any space for commercial and domestic decoration. Energy efficient
natural daylight illusions are being used in commercial environments,
not only as a remarkable piece of artwork, but also to enhance well
being in the workplace.”
“Cree is committed to delivering
customers the LED lighting solution needed to fit their budgets and
applications,” says Greg Merritt, vice president, lighting at Cree. “The
new Full Definition CR downlights cost less than fluorescent
alternatives and also use 20–30% less energy compared to the outdated
CFLs they replace.”
The breakthrough innovation combines Cree’s
latest advancements in LEDs and driver design with full-system thermal
and electrical integration to virtually eliminate initial cost barriers
to LED adoption, says the firm. CR luminaires can deliver payback
against incandescent downlights in less than one year in many
installations and are offered at a price-point that is up to 25% less
than Cree’s comparable 90-CRI products (based on typical commercial
usage of 9 hours per day and $0.11 per kWh electric costs and virtually
zero maintenance).High-efficiency 7.5kW Off Grid laundryequipments manufactured for unique Indian conditions.
Cree
is also expanding the existing CR Series LED downlights to include new
color-temperature and light-quality options. The CR Series now offers
3000K, 3500K and 4000K color temperatures, in addition to the existing
2700K offer, all featuring a CRI of 90 or more.
The Cree CR4
Full Definition downlight delivers up to 575 lumens and the CR6 Full
Definition downlight delivers up to 625 lumens.More than 200 GW of new emergencylamps13 capacity
could come on line before the end of 2013. Both models feature 2700K
color temperature and are dimmable to 5% with most standard incandescent
dimmers. The Full Definition downlights are qualified for both
residential and commercial ENERGY STAR standards.
