VMC banks on LED to light up Vadodara roads

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) - that has won four national awards for its streetlights - has now taken up a project to replace traditional sodium lights with energy efficient LED lights. Two stretches of roads in the city have already been illuminated with LED lights on an experimental basis.

The civic body had so far been dimming lights in low traffic hours late in the night to conserve energy. Taking a step further, the VMC has now decided to use LED lights in stretches where dimming of lights is not possible. The civic body has recently installed LED streetlights from the road leading to Subhanpura form the Alembic Store off the Refinery Road in Gorwa. It now plans to have such lights in the walled city on the roads leading to the four gates from Mandvi. A dozen such lights have already been installed between Gendigate and Mandvi. Later, it is also looking to illuminate the Bagikhana Road using the same technology.

VMC in-charge executive engineer (streetlights) Kaushik Parmar said that the LED fittings gave illumination to the tune of 138 lumens per watt (LPW) while the conventional sodium lights gave 115 LPW. But the bigger issue was with the maintenance. "The sodium fixtures have five different components including the lamp itself. With time they start malfunctioning and we have to rope in manpower to fix them. For each fixture, a team of three persons has to go for the repair," said Parmar.

The life of LED is roughly three times that of a sodium lamp. The vendors are also giving a five-year guarantee on the LED lights making them virtually maintenance-free for that period.
